Kaneana cave on Oahu is the site of one of Hawaii’s creation myths. Visitors will find this deep and high cave on the southwest side of the island off Farrington Highway. This remote area is perfect for hiking and gazing at the ocean. You may even see dolphins playing in the early morning. The sand at the cave opening even makes an interesting vibration sound due to the hollow nature of the individual grains. Come to this sacred location and take the time to enjoy its wonders.

Legends at Kaneana Cave on Oahu

According to Hawaiian myth, Kāne is the god of creation. This cave is seen to be the womb of the Earth, which is why it is named after Kāne: Kaneana Cave, which was the birthplace of humanity. Therefore, this is a sacred spot and visitors should take care to treat this area with respect. That being said, there are some who have not been so thoughtful. Visitors may observe graffiti on cave walls.

This cave is also the location of another legend: Nanaue. This half shark, half human was said to lure his human victims to the cave, where they would become his dinner.

Creepy Cave Stories

If you’re a fan of spooky stories, you may also want to consider a visit to Kaneana Cave on Oahu. Some say that priests who have been buried here haunt the cave. Others say that the cave still contains a portal to another world, and visitors have reported hearing voices within the cave. There has even been a homicide near the cave. Whether most these stories are true or not is hard to say, but it can be fun to visit a place with a long history whose cultural relevance continues to this day.

How was the Cave Formed?

Like many places in Hawaii, this cave was formed by an underwater lava tube nearly 150,000 years ago. While the cave used to be under water, now it is accessible on land. Visitors should be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight as well as sturdy, waterproof shoes. The inside of the caves continues to be slippery. This area is not a maintained park, so take care and don’t visit if you are not sure footed.

You will find narrow pathways within the cave that branch off in different directions. While this cave is a well known attraction, it has not been mapped out, so spelunkers should use caution and consider not venturing too far down cave tunnels.
