Sunset Beach – Famous Beaches of Hawaii
Sunset beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world. It is also one of the most dangerous beaches in Hawaii, if not the world. Learn when it is safe and when you shouldn’t go in the water at sunset beach on the North Shore of Oahu.
The location
Sunset beach on the north shore of Oahu is about an hour drive from Waikiki. It’s a long stretch of beach with many surf spots. It is more than 2 miles long. There are a lot of famous surf spots along the beach. During winter, there are lots of surf competitions. Banzai Pipeline, one of the most known surf spots is in Pūpūkea, which is very close to the beach. If you like to snorkel you might want to check out Sharks Cove. Sharks cove is a great place to snorkel up on the North Shore. You might even see turtles in the water. IF you like to snorkel closer to Waikiki, Hanauma Bay might be an alternative. If you already fell in love with this endless stretch of beach and are looking for a hotel there – SORRY! There are no hotels on sunset beach. The next bigger hotel is Turtle Bay, about 10 minutes away. Tip: Turtle Bay is great if you like to golf in Hawaii! The surf
During winter the waves can get up to 20, sometimes even 30 feet on the north shore. If you are interested in seeing some amazing powerful waves and skilled surfers, the north shore of Oahu is the place to go. A day at Sunset Beach
Bring a cooler, some cold drinks and snacks, because once you got comfortable at sunset beach, you won’t leave anytime soon. During summer you can have a beach day with the family, during winter the waves and the current is too strong for kids and even inexperienced swimmers. Close to Sunset beach there are food trucks, a gas station and a little further away there is Haleiwa. Haleiwa is a historic town on the North Shore of Oahu.
