What is Da Hui in Hawaii?
One of the local surf competitions on the North Shore of Oahu is the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout. Da is Pidgin English for “the”, and Hui in this instance meaning “club” or “clan”. When Da Hui was first started it was a group of surfers protecting their “turf”. As the influence and number of people surfing in Hawaii grew, Da Hui was created to protect and help to maintain respect in the line up. The Da Hui website states about their members that
these are extreme and proud people who have strong feelings about the protection and preservation of the Hawaiian culture, and will stop at nothing to defend it.
What is Da Hui today?
Da Hui today is more than just a group of people protecting their waves on the North Shore of Oahu. Da Hui has their own clothing line and they also organize and host surf competitions in Hawaii and even in Japan.
Their goal is to sponsor and help local talent. Local surfers in Hawaii and Japan are happy about the help they receive from Da Hui. One of the surf competitions they host in Hawaii is the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.
Local Surf Competition Hawaii Da Hui Backdoor Shootout
The competition in Hawaii was started in the mid 90’s. It is a yearly surf competition, just like most of the other surf competitions in Hawaii.
A very unique surf competition that does not run every year is the Eddie Aikau Invitational. The Eddie Aikau Surf Competition only runs when the conditions are perfect. As usual, the competition has a holding period. The holding Period is from Jan 4-16. The contest will run on the best 3-4 competition days. Usually it runs between 8am to 4pm. However the times can vary with the surf conditions. During the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout 2019 there was one day when the surf competition started at noon for example.
