Eddie Aikau is a famous Hawaiian public figure. He was the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay, an award-winning surfer, and a crew member of the Hokulea canoe. Eddie Aikau lost his life paddling from the capsized Hokulea towards the Hawaiian island of Lanai, looking for help. In remembrance of Eddie Aikau, a memorial, invitational big-wave surfing competition is held when the surf conditions are just right – the swells in open waters have to be a minimum of 20 feet high, which means the wave height ends up being over 30 feet tall. The competition has only been held nine times since its creation. This weekend will mark the 10th Eddie competition held.

Being able to see the contest in-person is quite difficult; if you manage to beat the traffic up to Waimea Bay, parking may still be an issue. Luckily, the Eddie competition will be livestreamed on KHON2.com and the Surfline YouTube channel. The Eddie will also be live broadcasted on KHII (channel 5). The broadcast will begin at 8 AM and end at 4:30 PM.
