What is it like to live in Hawaii during Coronavirus?
Weird: Hawaii is closed and yet tourists are coming to the islands
Every day tourists are coming to Hawaii. The numbers vary, but it is mostly around 200 new tourists a day. People fly to Hawaii, even though they have to follow a 14 day quarantine. During that time, the visitors are not allowed to leave the hotel room or vacation rental. Some of them even stay in illegal vacation rentals in Hawaii.
If the visitors are staying in Hotel, they still have to follow the 14 day quarantine. Of course it is not always easy to make sure the visitors are staying in their room. Some Hotels are thinking about giving out a one-time room key to new visitors. If they leave the room and need a new key, the hotel would immediately call the police. The guests would then be fined, arrested or put back on a plane home.

Hawaii recently reopened the beach parks. However, not everything is allowed in the beach parks. The beach rules are pretty simple. But it seems not everybody understands them. Daniels Hawaii created this Infographic that sums it up.
How bad is the Coronavirus Situation in Hawaii?
Hawaii was able to flatten the curve. The number of cases in Hawaii compared to the rest of the United States is minor. Oahu has the most inhabitants, so of course the numbers on the gathering island are the highest. Look for yourself.

When will Hawaii reopen?
Different sources say different things. As of today, there is no fixed date when Hawaii will reopen. Nobody knows exactly when Hawaii is ready to let tourists come back to the islands. Especially for small businesses in the travel industry or in tourism related industries times are very challenging. More and more smaller businesses have closed or are about to close. Watch our Drive-Through-Waikiki video to get an idea of what the usually busy town looks like during Coronavirus.
When will Hawaii Reopen? The University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization stated on May 4th that the end of July would be the Best Case Scenario. At least businesses and tourists now had an idea of how much longer the lockdown would last.
As of May 12th, there is a new idea of when Hawaii will reopen. Dr. David Agus mentioned in an interview with Hawaii News Now that Hawaii might be ready to reopen at the end of June. He mentioned that it could be an option to test potential visitors before they board their plane to Hawaii. If the Coronavirus test ends up being positive, the person would not be allowed to board the plan.
However, it is very important to know, these are only institutions or individuals suggesting what to do. Neither the Mayor of Honolulu, Kirk Caldwell, nor the Governor of Hawaii David Ige have given any date when Hawaii is going to reopen.
